Hosting dedicated server

The process of choosing a new dedicated server host can be difficult for both a professional and beginners alike and so should be down sloly otherwise you may regret it. There is a number of steps that you need to plan and write down to start with. managed dedicated servers

What are you going to be using the server for?

You should already know this but not everyone fully thinks it through. How about e-commerce and webhosting, game servers, disaster recovery or just a download mirror? As you need to know what exactly what software and services you are going to be running along with what operating system. You have to ensure your specification allows for expansion but not somthing that is going to be too large for too long or is going to become dwarfed too quickly.

Specification for hardware

Once you know the software, we can move along to talking about the specification in mind. At this point ignore money as that is irrelevant until you come to actually choosing a host to go with, your specification will vary depending on usage. The main things to watch out for is the number of physical CPU’s and how many cores they have as many providers now off dual or quad core as the norm. Depending on what your doing the RAM is potentially more important then the CPU but don’t try and cut corners by trying to opt for less as this may cripple your server under peak loads. Storage space is set by what software your using and how much you data you need to store as you don’t want to fill it too quickly, how is your backups going to be stored if its the same server then a separate disk would be highly recommended. You could opt for a RAID array in 0, 1, 10 or 5 depending on what you’re doing with the server.

Bandwidth

Now you know what your server is running hardware wise you will then need to think about the bandwidth or data transfer allowance. Bandwidth is shown in gigabytes, and can be difficult to know how much you need.A host like Melbourne will be able to help calculate how much bandwidth you might need, as when you run out there will be a charge or your server may be restricted till the end of the billing period. Now you know what your server is for, what the spec is and the bandwidth to go with it, you now need to find a host. One of the best piecies of advice I was given is to get a computing magazine and find all the nice glossy adds for server hosting and then see who you have left and it won’t be many, but these smaller companys will normally always give Using a quick search for some hosting forums and putting a number of posts up requesting for some product offers from companies and getting some reviews from other users to base you decision upon and will then normally get the best value for money.
