Cell Phones have fallen in price considerably making them a technology that almost ever consumer can afford. Therefore, cell phones are an item that senior citizens should be considering. We will list off some of the reasons why seniors should get one or have a family member purchase one for them.

There are so many different uses for a cell phone today. Just about everyone needs one for:

* Conducting business

* Staying in touch with family and their friends

* Feeling safe and secure

Cell phones have become so dependable and so reliable both in call connection and hardware that it isn’t a bad idea for seniors to drop their hard line and go for a cell phone as their main home phone.

Cell Phone Portability

Even if home bound most of the time, it still makes sense for a senior to have a cell phone with them and to use instead of the hard line. Generally, a hard line phone is tied to one location in the home so making a call requires the senior citizen to have to get up and go to another room to make a call. For many seniors, such is not an easy task. There is nothing more convenient than merely reaching into one’s pocket to phone family and friends.

Economical Choice

Many do not make the switch from a land line to a cell phone as their main phone as they have come to assume that a cell phone costs more to operate. This is no longer the situation.

Because seniors with cell phones are making calls at similar times during the day and to a regular group of users, seniors can take advantage of many plans that are offered by the major carriers that will make sure that they are only paying minimum user rates. There are also several companies which offer prepaid plans that have very competitive rates for out going and incoming calls.

If you don’t have a long distance plan at all, a cell phone can often pay for itself within a month or so. One also has the added security that you has a phone on oneself at all times in case of an emergency. Many cell phones have GPS and also have an emergency ‘panic’ button on the back of the phone. These phones are therefore serving two valuable purposes as they allow the senior cell phone users to stay in touch with friends and also assist with emergency alert.

A New Toy for the Old Boy

Although many seniors do not want to be learning about new technology as in one’s golden years there are better things to do with their time. However, many seniors do enjoy the challenge and the stimulation of a new gadget and some useful features. Many cell phones are designed specifically for seniors and feature large buttons and less ‘bells and whistles’.

If they don’t like technology don’t let this dissuade you as there are cell phone options out there that are just as easy, if not easier, than a lot of the landline handsets that are out there.

The Growing Universe of Android

When Google looks into the future it looks extremely bright for their Android smartphone platform. If you don’t want to go that far you could at least say that the future looks much more bright then it did around 2 years back when the Android smartphone platform made its debut. Back then it was just one single smartphone and didn’t have much in terms of add-on application offerings.

Within the keynote presentation there were some very impressive stats brought forward.

* 100,000 new activations of an Android device every day

* 50,000 fresh products and services throughout the Android Market ever day

Google also unveiled it new version of Android and it appears that this version is far more of a technological leap of the mere version 2.2 number would suggest. One example of how these version numbers don’t indicate when a software may have made a genuine breakthrough.

Here are some of the more interesting and exciting things that were offered within a bundle of new updates that were outlined by Google:

* Much quicker performance

* Flash support – While it’s true that Adobe Flash can sometimes be stupid and seem somewhat evil but sometimes you just have to watch a video or use some type of an interactive widget

* Backup built in to the platform

Perhaps the only complaint that many will have is the wait as many of the cell phone service providers/manufactures are not getting the upgrade right away. For example, HTC has noted that only those cell phones shipped in the second half of 2010 will be getting Froyo. All of the others will be running the existing Adroid software.

With extended battery life, this feature should have been advertised as one of the advanced features.

Android’s success can also be witnessed by the glass case display that was found down the hallway from the keynote address. Within this case are over 54 cell phones and tablet computers all using the Adroid software. The displayed allowed the visitors to see the current hardware line up as well as see what is coming from areas such as:

* Sony

* Samsung

* LG

* HTC

* Motorola

From viewing the line up one could confidently conclude that the if there isn’t a phone to match your size and shape criteria now there soon will be – even if the hardware is not as elegant as that of the iPhones…

Verizon iPhone or not however, there is plenty to be looking into on the Google Android hardware side of things.
